Before the separation from Montenegro, Serbian number plates used a two-letter regional identifier followed by two 2- or 3-digit numbers (XX 999-999). The Serbian flag is placed between the regional identifier and number sequence.

The current sequence of car registrations uses a two-letter regional identifier followed by a three-digit number and a two-letter alpha code (XX 999 XX). The blue stripe is now incorporated on the left-hand-side of the number plates.
