The current series of car registrations in Tajikistan came into effect in 2003. On the right hand side of the number plate is the region identifier, which is separated from the remainder of the registration by a vertical line. The number plates themselves are white with a black border and black lettering. Diplomatic plates are red with white lettering. The previous series of plates were during the period Tajikistan was a part of the former USSR, so had some Russian characters on the plates.
