The current series of car registrations in Turkmenistan came into effect in 1994, once the country had split from the former USSR. Standard number plates are oblong and white with black characters and a black border. The Turkmenistan is displayed on the left hand side of the plate, with the initials ‘TM’. Government number plates are green with a more descriptive flag, whereas diplomatic plates and blue with white characters. Foreigners are assigned yellow plates.
