The current series of car registrations in the Ukraine came into effect in 2004. The number plates are white with black lettering and the country emblem on the country flag on the left hand side of the plate. The format of the registration is LL NNNN LL, where L is a letter and N is a number. The previous two series of vehicle registrations were quite similar, apart from the look of the flag and the format of the registration itself. Prior to 1993 Ukraine was part of the former USSR, hence it had Soviet number plates then.
