The current series of car registrations in Uruguay came into effect in 2002. The number plates are white with black characters and a black border. At the bottom of the plate, the word ‘URUGUAY’ is displayed. The format of the registration is LLL DDDD, with L being a letter and D being a digit. The previous series of vehicle registrations displayed the area the vehicle was registered in, instead of the country name. The first series of plates were introduced in 1962 and the number plates were black with white lettering. The area identifier was at the top of the plate then.
