Personal collections of plates

By Ruby Speechley

Owning a collection of number plates is becoming more popular amongst families. As soon as mum or dad buys one, it seems that everyone in the family wants one of their own.

The Holmes family from Devon have an extensive array of plates that has continued to grow over many years. Mum Elaine (Dorothy Zena) has EDZ 1 and son Matthew (Christian) has A1 MCH as well as FF 7819 on a Ford Focus. “His birthday falls on Christmas day, so he also has the very eye-catching 25 DEC,” said Dad, Graham, “it’s even been featured on the TV show Top Gear.”

Daughter Hayley (Rebecca) has the equally striking plate HR 11, which might make her majesty do a double take. “She has JAZ 6872 on her first car, a Honda Jazz,” said Graham, “the numbers stand for the date of her birthday 6/8/72.” Despite Graham’s obvious enthusiasm for personalised plates, he is surprisingly the only member of his family yet to find one to suit him. “The trouble is that would mean getting yet another car!”

The Ginns family from Leicestershire have a neat collection of their own. “I have GFG 242 for my initials,” said Gerald, “the 242 represents the house number where my wife Janet was born. My daughter Fiona has FG 999, which originally belonged to my father Frank. He passed it down to me when he died, but I always wanted a GFG plate, so I let Fiona have it. Janet has ABC 999, which was on my late mother’s car for many years. Leicester City Council owns ABC 1 on the mayoral car but they want our ABC number too! They don’t want to give us any money for it or even replace it with another number. Mind you, it would have to be a lot of money for us to part with it.”

Another family has found a fantastic trio of plates. Roy (Ronald) Drouet spent many years searching for a number with his initials so was overjoyed to find RRD 3. His good fortune continued when he won the bidding at an auction for 3 RRD, which will be for his son Ryan (Roy). “Then my wife Dee decided that she would like a plate too. We found 333 DEE for her. All three plates look brilliant together,” said Roy.
